This presentation will cover issues that arise after a premature child leaves the nursery. These include those that arise in children who have received treatment for retinopathy of prematurity, either laser or intravitreal bevacizumab, and also those that arise from prematurity itself. The lifelong nature of some of the risks associated with prematurity will be discussed.

Featured Speakers

Dr. Pavan Avinashi, OD, BSc, graduated from ICO. He has a special interest in ocular surface diseases, CL, and laser refractive surgery. He is Chair for the Optomize Faculty, an Administrator for Vision Source Canada, a consultant for numerous pharmaceutical companies, and has been involved with various aspects of BCDO. He was recognized as Young Optometrist of the Year by BCDO in 2013, and as Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce in 2014 and 2016 respectively. He speaks regularly on topics ranging from dry eye disease to practice management across Canada.

Dr. Luke Small, OD, is a 3rd generation optometrist in Winnipeg. In 2012, Dr. Small received MAO’s Optometrist of the Year award in recognition of his work with CNIB, Siloam Mission and MAO. He currently co-chairs the MAO Public Relations Committee. He is on the advisory boards for Allergan and Shire Pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Andre Jastrzebski, MD, FRCSC, was the first resident in the University of Manitoba’s new ophthlmology residency program and now practices in Winnipeg, specializing in medical retina, management of complex uveitis and cataract surgery. He is a lecturer with the University of Manitoba’s Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Mira Acs, OD, FAAO, is a graduate of U of Waterloo with over 30 years experience in a full scope, primary care practice. She brings her practice experience and the insights gained through her peer-to-peer meetings on practice management and personal experience wearing and fitting multifocal CL to her presentations on practice development opportunities for today’s practitioner. She has a dry eye clinic in her practice and shares her insights on both clinical and business related aspects. Dr. Acs is a past president of both OAO and the Vision Institute of Canada. She is passionate about learning and sharing her learning.

Dr. Ravi Dookeran, MD, FRCSC, runs a surgical and medical retinal practice serving Manitoba, Nunavut and Western Ontario. He completed a fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at McGill University in 2006. Dr. Dookeran is actively involved in clinical research and an Assistant Professor and head of resident retina education in the U of M’s Dept of Ophthalmology. He is committed to teaching at an academic level and in the public sector.

Dr. Conor Mulholland, FRCSC, is a Pediatric Ophthalmologist and Adult Strabismus surgeon based at Children’s Hospital, HSC. His medical degree is from Queen’s University Belfast and he completed postgraduate training in the UK at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. Dr. Mulholland undertook a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus through The U of BC at the BC Children’s Hospital Vancouver. He worked at the University Hospital Wales in Cardiff UK for 4 years before moving to Winnipeg in 2014.

Dr. Joshua Manosow, MD, FRCSC, Vitreoretinal Surgeon, is a lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology at the U of M. He practices at the Manitoba Clinic and operates at the Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg. Dr. Manusow obtained his BSc (Hons) from McGill University and his MD from the U of M where he concurrently received a BSc in Experimental Surgery. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto and his Vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Toronto Western Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
